Some forecasted showers that for once turned into more like rainstorms yesterday and today have brought along that nice gloom for fish migrations, but probably will not change any trib flows much. I for one am glad for some consistent winter weather to at least reset seasonal conditions after the mild fall. Then there are those fish more or less landlocked in the overflow pools. Water visibility was about 6-foot at the time. Trolling in a west direction was tough as the current was making it difficult. Any rainfall is really going to get things cranking and water color this time is likely to get dirty. The area smaller trib flows bumped up slightly while flows in the Oak have kept humming along at about slightly high and slightly stained. I have stayed busy trolling 60-105 ft near bottom with cut bait fly rigs especially on magnum wire divers. Consider how wet its been for months now, the high water tables, saturated fields and brim full swamp headwater supplies and youll come to realize the typical slow rise and quick fall of trib levels is going to occur more like quick rise and slow fall. Flows in the Oak are slightly high with 1 2 ft of stained visibility. Also a few more brown trout hook ups have been reported, but its plenty earlier for that with lots of good trout action ahead of us. Most noticeable drop will be the Oak since the Canal flows are also throttling back. So when even a reasonable high and stained water window presents itself, that may be the best time to fish. You can feel the Spring change in the weather now and with ice cover going away on Lake Alice, there will be the typical warming of water temps in the Oak. The action at the Oak rivermouth is something like a few fish each prime period like dawn or dusk. Over in Wilson, the recent rains actually pulled some salmon into 12 Mile Creek and salmon and trout are being caught off the piers there, as well. Water temps have flirted with 40F but should slide back with the forecasted colder weather ahead. First time fishing on Lake Ontario, Meagan Hardner caught this lake trout on spoons trolled within 10 feet of the bottom, in 50-60 feet of water straight out of Oak Orchard. In the Oak, flows are moderate and mostly clear and likewise may hold onto those fair moderate flows instead of dropping back to real low. If you catch one, please release it immediately and not harm it. Anglers seeing and having hook up success on browns is encouraging we are likely on a trajectory to out pace last years brown trout action already. And really you may not want to give up completely on salmon efforts just yet. Here on the Niagara Frontier, it was heaviest and there are lesser accumulations south of here. Flows in the Oak are clearing slowly and hanging in somewhere between med and slightly high. Stay tuned though for any future high water that could really perk things up. And that flat downstream water on the Oak is just tougher to fish period except for good float techniques or cast/retrieve. Reports of good King and some trout action at Burt 18 Mile Creek. A little rise in flows and some stain to the water makes for a willing biter with this nearly 20 pound hen steelhead. Water temps had bumped up into the 40sF and the ice on Lake Alice is gone. The other area smaller tribs comparitively to the Oak anyway, have better looking flows at low to mod and slightly stained viz. The trout follow the salmon looking for an egg meal. Just prior to the lowering of flows, guys reported steelhead hook ups at the dam and overflow pools and scattered downstream thru the fast water gravel stretches for spawning fish. Another warmup is forecast thru the mid week with highs in the 40sF and another chance at rain Thursday. When high flows drop and/or cold flows warm and/or dirty water clears then anglers who can make good drifts or swings get in on the action.
